Python 101 & 102 @ PyConSG 2025
SIT Punggol (Campus Court)
On Day 3 of PyConSG 2025, PyLadies Singapore and Women Devs SG co-hosted the free Python 101 & 102 workshops, open to the public and led entirely by women facilitators. Participants came from diverse backgrounds โ including students, working professionals, and career switchers โ all eager to kickstart their Python journey. The morning session, Python 101, was run by Aishwarya E (Women Devs SG) and Ria Khaitan (PyLadiesSG), offering a crash course in programming fundamentals. Participants wrapped up the session with their own mini projects like budget trackers and simple games.
In the afternoon, Eileen Chua (Women Devs SG) and Hwee Shan Tay (PyLadiesSG) led Python 102, which explored key data science libraries like NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib, and Seaborn. Participants worked on real datasets, visualising nutritional data from fast food menus and uncovering surprising insights.
On the morning of Day 2 at PyConSG 2025, PyLadies Singapore proudly hosted the inaugural PyLadiesSG Track โ a significant milestone in championing women in tech. The event featured two inspiring keynotes: Bhavya Chandra, who offered relatable and practical guidance for early-career professionals in her talk "From Classroom to Code," and Aishwarya E, who shared her unconventional tech journey in "No Degree, No Bootcamp, No Problem," inspiring many with her grit and growth mindset. The session continued with a vibrant panel discussion on "Advancing Career & Mentorship for (Py)Ladies," where experienced women in tech shared valuable insights on career growth, technical development, and mentorship.
The track concluded with an engaging icebreaker game and a heartwarming networking lunch sponsored by Ahrefs and catered by Project Dignity. The event was made possible with support by the wider PyConSG crew, and from Women Devs SG. The collaboration and energy from all involved highlighted the strength of community when women support one another. PyLadies Singapore looks forward to hosting more empowering and inclusive events in the near future.
PyLadies Singapore held our first meetup of 2025 in the form of an Intro to Python workshop. More than 50 ladies from all walks of life turned up, and together with our all-female team of speakers and facilitators, almost 70 ladies rocked the house down learning and sharing how to code in Python! ๐ฅ
Thanks to NTU Women In Tech for the kind venue & refreshment sponsorship, so that our ladies can have such a spacious venue to learn and network with each other.

How We Started
PyLadiesSG was started in 2014 by Ms Cheryl Ng when she was an A-level Computing student in Dunman High School. After attending PyCon APAC 2014 in Taiwan where she co-presented talk on proposing a future-oriented high school Computing curriculum and how to support more females to study Computing, she was inspired and encouraged by the vibrant PyLadies scene in Taiwan that upon returning to Singapore, she applied to start the inaugural PyLadiesSG chapter from the PyLadiesSG international mentoring group. As always, the tech communities were welcoming and supportive of her enthusiasm and initiative and provided venues, speakers and various kinds of assistance.

Ms Ng organised a few outreach events for females into her graduating year. She then received a scholarship to pursue university studies in Japan, and is currently doing well as a trilingual actress (Twitter, Instagram, Agency Website)
In commemoration of the resurrection of a new team of PyLadiesSG and PyCon Singapore 2025, we got in touch with Ms Ng to find out how she has been getting on:
When did you first learn Python and please share your learning journey?
I started learning Python when I was a high school student. My Computing teacher taught us the ropes and inspired us to make websites and apps with Python!
Do you still use or remember Python?
I do! I teach coding on the weekends to students of ages 6~15 when I do not have acting projects on those days! For work outside of acting, I don't necessarily use Python, but the coding knowledge helps with formulas in excel and AirTable!
What interesting projects are you currently pursuing that you would like to share with us?
Oh! I am planning out a few comedy skits as well as some interviews about life in Japan to post on Instagram and YouTube! I'll also be performing internationally with the bilingual improv group I'm in, Pirates of Tokyo Bay in Vietnam in April and in the Philippines in September (For those of you going to Japan, you can catch us in Ebisu every month! Singapore will have to wait till 2026 ๐) For those who prefer action, I am currently acting in a British Tokusatsu (heroes in special suits) called Avalon, Knight of the Round Table and we will be filming in the next few months!
Any last words to encourage your PyLadiesSG successors? ๐
Thank you so much for continuing PyLadiesSG! It is very heartening to see the group still running. I cannot thank you enough and would actually prefer to have everyone's names credited and not only mine. I only lit the spark, but all of you kept it burning. A big shout out to Hannie (the successor after me) and the others (I am sorry I do not know your names) and now Hwee Shan, Darlene, Ping Jin, Wei Qing, May Yin and of course, my Computing teacher and the Python committee in Singapore! PyLadiesSG would have ended when I went to Japan without you all.
We thank Ms Ng for initiating the first chapter of PyLadiesSG while she was still a high school student (one is never too young to have a positive impact on others), and sincerely wish her all the best in her current and future endeavours in life.
